Toyota extends airbag inflator replacement programPOSTED BY Raja Danielle ON 10 April 2017
UMW Toyota Motor SdnBhd (UMWT) announced a Special Service Campaign (SSC) for the replacement of the front passenger side airbag inflator module which were installed in several Toyota models sold in Malaysia.
Based on information received from Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), there are around 42,000 units of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia that are affected, consisting of the Corolla Altis, Vios, Yaris and Alphard. These vehicles were manufactured from May 2010 to Dec 2012 and distributed by UMWT.
The SSC is an expansion of earlier campaigns by TMC relating to vehicles equipped with airbag inflator modules. The defect is due to propellant degradation occurring after extended exposure to high humidity and high temperatures.
The modules may rupture as they contain a non-desiccated, phase-stabilised ammonium nitrate propellant. Should such a situation occur, metal fragments will pass through the airbag as it inflates and into the vehicle interior at high speed. As a result, severe injury or death could occur.
Currently, TMC is working to obtain the necessary parts for the SSC and once the parts are made available, UMWT will notify owners requesting them to bring their cars to an authorised Toyota service centre for necessary replacements. The process should take about one to three hours and all costs will be absorbed by UMWT.
UMWT has escalated its efforts to reach vehicles owners and the company is aware that some of them are not contactable since they are not the first owners. Therefore, it is crucial that current owners of the affected vehicles, contact any authorised Toyota service centre or call the Toyota Freephone line at 1-800-8-TOYOTA (869682).
Owners can also check if their vehicles are affected by referring to the vehicle identification number (VIN) checker available athttps://toyota.com.my/aftersales-services/special-service-campaigns
