Subaru XV STI Performance Edition launched at RM144k (w/video)POSTED BY Dinesh Appavu ON 11 July 2014
The letters ‘STI’ are an acronym for Subaru Tecnica International, the tuning and performance arm of Subaru, and has lent its touch to the marque’s best-selling model here to give us the Subaru XV STI Performance Edition that was launched at the flagship Subaru 3S facility in Petaling Jaya on Friday with a starting pice of RM143,800.
Before you whip out your cheque books to make a downpayment, the STI enhancements for the XV consist mostly exterior add-ons although the STI officials at the launch insisted that the benefits were beyond cosmetic and contribute to aerodynamics as the bits were tested in a wind tunnel by STI engineers. They added that the aero bits reduce front and rear lift by 50 per cent.
The body kit comprises lips all-around, from the front bumper, side skirts and rear bumper, together with spoiler over the rear hatch. Obligatory is the STI badging that makes no qualms about where the aero bits came from. LED daytime running lights are also part of the package.
Perhaps the biggest dynamic improvement comes in the engine bay, but it is not in the form of any extra power whatsoever. As part of the XV STI Performance Edition, you get an STI Flexible Tower Brace that has ball joints in the middle to improve body rigidity and response time.
Inside, things remain largely unchanged but the climate control buttons get some faux chrome trim and the steering wheel inserts as well as the side panels get a more attractive matte silver treatment.
Mechanically, nothing has changed under the hood. The power figures from the 2-litre boxer-engine still weigh in at 148hp and 196Nm of torque that hits all four wheels via a CVT with six virtual gears. Safety is still top notch too, with dual front airbags, a driver’s knee airbag and VDC among the features.
