Subaru BRZ enters the frayPOSTED BY Dinesh Appavu ON 17 June 2013
The official importer and distributor of Subaru vehicles in the country, Motor Image Sdn. Bhd, have launched the Subaru BRZ here in conjunction with the recently concluded Super GT 2013 race at Sepang International Circuit and it makes quite a splash with a price that undercuts its twin, the Toyota GT86, by approximately RM10,000 by starting at RM239,800 for the six-speed automatic variant.
Developed jointly with Toyota as a successor to the legendary Toyota AE86, Subaru are determined to forge their own identity for the BRZ by setting it apart from its twin brother, the GT86. The acronym BRZ stands for boxer engine, rear-wheel drive and Zenith; marking a symbiosis of Subaru’s trademark horizontally-opposed boxer engines with rear-wheel drive, a departure from their traditional symmetrical all-wheel drive architecture, to give the BRZ its exceptional handling.
The BRZ is powered by the same mill found in the GT86, a 2.0-liter boxer engine producing 198hp and 205Nm of torque. The engine in the BRZ is given the FA20 code while the one in the GT86 is bestowed the 4U-GSE nomenclature, although both are identical. Weighing in at an impressive, 1,278kg, the power-to-weight ratio is in favour of the BRZ, allowing it to hit the century mark in 7.6-seconds and a top speed of 231km/h.
Features in the BRZ include a ‘Vehicle Stability Control’ system, keyless access, push start button, dual-zone climate control and paddle shifters. As reported earlier, the six-speed automatic BRZ starts at RM239,800 and is now available for booking.
