THE local assembly of the Renault Fluence is an indication of the Renault-Nissan global alliance’s strategy to put the Renault marque in higher gear in Malaysia and the Asean region.
Coming in a single variant, the Renault Fluence 2.0 16V 140 X-Tronic will be assembled in Tan Chong Motor Assemblies’ Segambut plant, with the signing of a manufacturing agreement between Renault and local distributor TC Euro Cars.
Gilles Normand, chairman of the Asia-Pacific Region for the Renault group, and Kuan Kim Luen, director and chief executive officer TC Euro Cars Sdn Bhd, sealed the strategic partnership.
“We are delighted to be strengthening our partnership with Tan Chong Motors, partner to Nissan, with which Renault has been working for over 10 years. This agreement marks the start of a new stage in the development of Renault in Malaysia where our ambition is to establish Renault as the second biggest European manufacturer by 2018,” said Gilles Normand.
He said the partnership will see more Renault models being introduced to Malaysia, with the possibility of another completely knocked down (CKD) model seeing the light in 2016.
The CKD Fluence gets a 2-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 143hp at 6,000rpm and 195Nm of torque at 3,700 rpm, with an Xtronic CVT drivetrain carried by the previous generation (G11) Nissan Sylphy.
The century sprint is dealt with in a little above 10 seconds with a top speed of 195km/h. Combined fuel economy is a claimed 7.7 litres per 100km on the European cycle.
The length, width, height and wheelbase of the Fluence are 4,618, 1,813, 1,485 and 2,702mm respectively, while the suspension is taken care of by MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam out back, with disc brakes all round.
Features include steering bundle audio controls, auto headlamps and wipers, leather seats, dual-zone auto air-conditioning, rear air vents, keyless entry and start (Renault hands-free card with remote central locking), cruise control, reverse camera and voice control.
The back seats are split 60:40 and there’s a fold down armrest with two cupholders.
A seven-inch touch-screen display comes with the Renault R-Link multimedia system, which incorporates the navigation system, telephony function and can be connected to portable music players through Bluetooth, USB and jack sockets, with sound enhanced through a six-speaker Arkamys 3D system.
The host of safety features include six airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability program with anti-skid regulation and understeering control as well as rear-seat Isofix.
The estimated price for the Renault Fluence is RM115,000 OTR without insurance. Included is a five-year warranty with unlimited mileage and two-year/40,000km free service.
You also get a courtesy car if your Fluence has to undergo maintenance in the workshop for more than 48 hours.
Early birds who book a Fluence from now until the end of June will get an extra three years’ free service.
Available colours are Ultra Silver, Black Metallic, Mars Grey and White Pearl.
