Oh Toh: Santa Fe or CR-V?POSTED BY Dinesh Appavu ON 10 March 2015
My aunt in Penang is a big fan of yours. The last time she asked for your advice, she bought the car you recommended and was very happy.
Now she’s buying another car and this one, she wants to keep for a long time. She’s shortlisted two cars and her main concerns are fuel economy and after sales service/availability of spare parts.
It’s down to the Hyundai Santa Fe of the Honda CR-V. What’s your advice?
Reply: Your aunt has picked two interesting cars. Both are SUVs but the Santa Fe is a bigger, more premium SUV than the CR-V. It has a 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine that is powerful yet fuel efficient.
The Honda CR-V is Malaysia’s best-selling SUV and holds its value better compared to the Santa Fe.
But since your aunt specifically wants fuel efficiency, then the Santa Fe is the obvious choice because diesel is about 30 per cent more fuel efficient than the Honda’s spark ignition engine plus it has monstrous torque and can seat seven over the Honda’s five.
On the area of after sales service and parts availability, the Honda is the clear winner because parts for these cars are available everywhere.
For me, if I did not have to worry about resale value, I would buy the Santa Fe because it is so much more engaging to drive and its fuel consumption is better.
But she is not me and I am not her. So ask your aunty to go and test drive both the cars before she decides.
