Interview: Mazda diesel tech will shine in M’sian market, says YeohPOSTED BY Nigel Andretti ON 22 July 2016
AUTO industry chief, Datuk Seri Ben Yeoh, CEO of Berjaya Auto Bhd, talks to Motorme.my editor, Yamin Vong about Euro5 diesel and B10 biodiesel at the launch of the CX-5 and Mzda6 2.2L SkyActiv-D range….
THE Mazda 2.2L SkyActiv-D and Mazda 6 are the first Japanese diesel-powered passenger cars in Malaysia.
Our diesel engine technology will not only be accepted by tech-savvy people, it will also appeal to them.
Biodiesel B7 is not an issue. This is accepted by Mazda Motor Corporation and all the car brands in Malaysia.
But car makers including Mazda Motor Corporation have issues with biodiesel B10 as proposed by the palm oil lobbyists. B10 is a concentration of 10 per cent palm oil in mineral diesel and at this level, the fatty acids will gradually corrode the componentry of the diesel fuel injection system.
The particulate matter (PM) filter will get clogged earlier than normal and the emissions levels will go up.
The manufacturers who say that B10 is OK have chosen “bad diesel” packages for their cars. Their oil change interval is lower and their water separators have to be upgraded or changed more frequently.
Their injector systems will be detuned and their PM filters made less sensitive.
We want to ensure that our engine lifespan is as forecast by manufacturers.
Of course we can even have B100 as long as there are no fatty acids in the palm oil. This non-acidic B100 palm oil is available in Europe and this type of non-acidic palm oil can be used up to a concentration of 100 per cent palm oil (B100 biodiesel) if you can afford it.
Two generations of diesel engines ago, we could use 100 per cent palm oil, Crude Palm Oil (CPO) and more expensive cooking oil, as diesel fuel.
That time, fuel injection systems were mechanical and primitive. They didn’t have high pressure common-rail, nor piezo electric injectors, nor direct injection.
With Euro5 diesel in Malaysia, we can promote higher energy efficient engines such as our 2.2L SkyActiv-D.
