Hybrid hotcakesPOSTED BY CBT Team ON 17 July 2014
Dear Master Oh Toh,
I just found out that the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid is no longer selling at RM584k but is back to RM888,880. According to a salesman, the quota for the S400 Hybrid has been used up. Is this true?

Even though the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid is locally assembled, hence the tax and duty exemptions, it is still a low volume vehicle and the total number of units put together here in Malaysia is affected by a couple of factors.
Due to it being a low volume production, there are a limited number of CKD packs imported here and according to Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM), the entire quota until the end of 2015 has been spoken for.
While MBM are able to take orders for 2016’s quota, they are refraining from doing so until further notice due to the fact that the duty and tax exemptions for locally assembled hybrids and EEVs are only valid until 31 December 2015. Given the uncertainty of the exemptions being continued past that point, they are unable to guarantee a price for the car.
The RM888,880 price you were quoted by the salesman is likely for the regular, non-hybrid S400 model that does not qualify for the exemptions.
