Friendship Beyond Borders – Friends on a quest

POSTED BY Tony Yew ON 14 December 2015

From a career in the car industry to a car dealer, and from his passion in classic cars to using one of his products, Rukhshan Munisinghe is going to realise his dream of travelling by road to Sri Lanka with his friend Manivannan Manikumaran.

From Klang, they met when they were out riding on motorcycles, and have since done a few road trips, but this will be their first trip in a classic car, travelling from Malaysia to Sri Lanka, through Thailand, Myanmar and India. Whereas they have only spent a week on the road together previously, this journey will definitely put their friendship to a test.

Calling their journey ‘Friendship Beyond Borders’ is probably most appropriate seeing that they have already forged friendships via facebook well before they kicked off their journey. The Myanmar Classic car club, has already helped the duo with getting the right documents in place and will be eagerly awaiting their arrival.
Leaving their families will be the most difficult part of the journey for the duo who will be expecting to complete at least 300-400kms a day In hope to complete their 12000+km journey in 30 days.

Rukhshan deals in classic cars and found this 1971 Ford Capri 1300GT through a popular website and needless to say, the car will now be his permanently. He counts 2 classic Ford Escorts, another Capri and a BMW E21 soft-top as his collection. For this trip, his Capri has undergone only minor modifications; by adding an electronic distributor as well as a fuel pump, whereas the previous owner had already added an air condition unit. We saw an immaculately prepared vehicle ready to take on the challenge. They will also be taking on some additional parts as well as two spare tyres.

Since publicising their journey, friends have also started supporting their trip by contributing both in cash and kind. When Cars, Bikes & Trucks met up with the duo, they were completing their stickers in preparation for a TV Interview.

For Rukhshan, going to Sri Lanka was a no brainer seeing that he is already managing a Sri Lankan racing team in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Cup, and as such cannot miss ‘landing’ on the island.

If you wish to follow their journey, do drop by their facebook page ‘Friendship Beyond Borders’ or visit our CBT Online Facebook page which will carry updates of their journey.
