CKD Subaru XV launched; RM150,000 on-the-roadPOSTED BY Mick Chan ON 19 December 2012
Subaru’s latest crossover is now available as a locally assembled version.
In partnership with Fuji Heavy Industries, the subsidiary of Tan Chong International Limited has commenced local assembly of the XV at the Segambut plant as part of a series of initiatives towards increasing the Japanese manufacturer’s presence in the Southeast Asian region.
Two variants of the locally assembled crossover were launched; the XV 2.0i and the XV 2.0i Premium. For the Malaysian market the 2.0i is the sole variant available, priced at RM150,000 on-the-road. The XV 2.0i Premium is for export.
A combined total on over 5,000 units will be produced annually for Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, with 1,000 orders for the crossover taken so far, according to Subaru. Demand for the XV is expected to be equal between the three countries, therefore Subaru says at least 65% of the local production output will be destined for export.
According to Glenn Tan, executive director of Tan Chong International Limited, the total investment across Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia was approximately US$30 million. The total invested into operations in Malaysia alone was approximately US$10 million.
In addition to the setting up of production facilities, the scope of Subaru’s investment in the region also includes the addition of more sales and distribution outlets throughout Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Responding to a query regarding after-sales support, Tan said that in areas served by sales-only outlets, a nearby workshop will be appointed to handle the Subaru XV’s servicing needs.
