Bosch ST Hightec AGM battery packs powerful punchPOSTED BY Nigel Andretti ON 08 September 2016

There are two things to remember:
1. Germans are among those who pioneered the chemistry of electric storage batteries.
2. Today’s generation of cars with stop-start function, such as the Mazda CX-5, require higher performance batteries with more robust chemistry using high conductivity silver alloy grids to hold the lead paste.
For cars with advanced stop-start systems, Bosch makes the range of ST Hightec AGM batteries.
Stop-Start technology is rapidly being introduced by car makers to cut fuel consumption and meet ever reducing CO2 emission standards.
In city traffic, the vehicle’s electrical system can consume more power than the alternator can supply. Due to less charging opportunity in a stop-start system, it is important that the battery can recharge quickly and also quickly dump out the amps to re-start the car from idle/stop.
For the rest of us who drive conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, Bosch has introduced the SM Mega Power Silver range of batteries with 30 per cent more power than equivalent batteries from other brands.
The SM Mega Power Silver features long service life by wrapping its positive plates with a tissue to prevent the shedding of the lead paste from the grid. The grid itself is made of a stable silver alloy that reduces the corrosion rate and decreases self-discharge.
Active safety features including ABS and ESP draw battery power so the SM Mega Power Silver range of batteries for passenger cars is a beneficial investment.
Battery terminals are one of the weak points of a battery and in the Bosch SM Mega Power Silver series, they are crimped to the plate connections rather than inserted. Crimping increases the conductance of electricity.
Negative plates in the battery are placed in a tough polyethylene envelope separator to prevent short circuiting due to overheating and overcharging.
Underpinning all these features is a high density and special crystal structure of the active lead plate material. This provides better conductivity and high performance during cranking.
Bosch installed the SM Mega Power Silver battery in our Range Rover P38, a 4.0 litre V8 for our review. Six months later, we’ll remove the battery and shelf it for a month after which we’ll re-install the battery into the test vehicles and see if it can still crank the engine.
See this space in 7 months time (March 2017) for the update of this road test.
