Some say the 5 Series is the benchmark of motoring. Though it may not be the most upmarket model in BMW’s lineup, yang 5 Series has always been in the front line of the German marque since 1972.

The car was recently awarded the iF Gold Award 2017, the highest accolade in design awards, and at the time of this report, is currently a finalist for the famed World Luxury Car of the Year Award 2017. The all-new 5 Series is priced at RM398,800 on-the-road without insurance.

According to BMW Group Malaysia’s head of corporate communications, Sashi Ambi, the plan to locally assemble the new 5 Series is in the pipeline, but it will not happen anytime soon and the price is not expected to differ by much.

The formula for the G30 is pretty much in line with older 5 Series models. Compared to the previous F10 5 Siri, the G30 differs by merely a few millimetres in its dimensions, bagaimanapun, the overall length has grown by 30.5mm.

Baru 5 Series – like the 7 Series – receives the BMW EfficientLightweight treatment which lowers its centre of gravity, improves front-to-rear weight distribution, increases torsional stiffness and helps the car to be 100kg lighter than its predecessor. These advantages are achieved with the increased use of aluminium and high-tensile steel.

Aerodynamics are also improved on the new car with best-in-class drag coefficient of 0.22, thanks to the comprehensive usage of airflow-optimising elements including air vent control in the kidney grille, Air Curtains on the front apron as well as Air Breathers on the front wings.

Standard exterior equipment includes the BMW Adaptive full-LED headlights with LED DRLs, and for the first time on the 5 Siri, the headlights and the kidney grille are directly linked. With the M Sport package, baru 5 Series comes with 19-inch M light alloy wheels, M Sport brake with blue-painted callipers, M Aerodynamics components, and front and rear aprons.

Buyers will have to choose between four body colours; Black Sapphire, Sophisto Grey Brilliant Effect, Alpine White and Mediterranean Blue.

Internally, the G30 530i M Sport gets sports seats up front, illuminated M door sills all around, new M aluminium pedals and M leather steering wheel. Rear passengers are blessed with what BMW claims as best-in-class spaciousness: 4,936mm in length (an additional 29mm as from the previous model), 1,868mm in width (additional 8mm) and 1,479mm in height (additional 2 mm). Sementara itu, the luggage compartment capacity is at 530 liter.

The upholstery comes in either Leather Dakota Black with contrasting Blue stitching or Leather Dakota Cognac with contrast stitching (only for the Alpine White, Sophisto Grey Brilliant Effect and Black Sapphire).

Baru 5 Series incorporates the latest generation iDrive system for its navigation and entertainment functions. Depending on the driver, these functions can be controlled by voice command, hand gestures or by directly touching the 10.25-inch screen.

Other standard kits are automatic air-conditioning with four-zone climate control, electronically-adjustable sports seats with memory function (driver’s only) and a touchscreen-equipped Display Key which shows crucial vehicle information.

Under the muscular body is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with Twin Scroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection, Valvetronic fully-variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. The optimised engine generates 252hp and 350Nm of torque.

The powerplant is mated to an equally sophisticated eight-speed Steptronic Sports transmission. This combination enables the car to accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 6.2 seconds and up to a top speed of 250km/h.

Apart from the Comfort, Sport and Eco Pro driving modes made available across BMW’s current lineup, there is a new addition called the Adaptive mode. This mode automatically adapts the steering, Dynamic Damper Control and Steptronictransmission to the driver’s driving style and route.

keselamatan bijak, the new 530i gets a host of active safety features that consists of active cruise control with Stop&Go function that adjusts the pre-set speed to the traffic situation based on radar and camera data. It slows down or even stops the car when it encounters congestion or stopped traffic and it can operate at speeds of up to 210km/h.

Another new driver assistance system is the Speed Limit Info with the Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, which works together with the aforementioned active cruise control. Sebagai tambahan, the car is equipped with lane departure warning, lane change warning, approach control warning and person warning with city braking function, which warns the driver and slows the car down while it is travelling at 10km/h to 60km/h should it detect people and up to 80km/h for vehicles.

Warranty Packages

The new 530i M Sport will be available at all authorised BMW dealerships across the country.

The RM399,000 price tag comes together with BMW Group Malaysia’s five-year unlimited mileage warranty, free scheduled service program and BMW tyre warranty programme.
