PETRONAS Mercedes clinch F1 constructors’ titlePOSTED BY Nigel Andretti ON 10 October 2016
THE PETRONAS Mercedes AMG team sealed the Formula 1 constructors’ champion for the third straight year as Nico Rosberg swept to victory at yesterday’s Japanese Grand Prix.
The team needed just eight points from the Suzuka round to put them out of reach of second placed Red Bull.
Rosberg’s win and teammate Lewis Hamilton’s third placing ensured the Silver Arrows comfortably retained the title in another dominating season.
The champagne had been on ice since last week, when a Hamilton engine failure in Malaysia denied them the chance to clinch the championship at the home of primary sponsor PETRONAS.
Attention switches now to the battle between the teammates for the drivers’ championship.
Rosberg now holds a 33-point lead over second-placed Hamilton with four rounds to go — USA, Mexico, Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

Rosberg, 31, knows a maiden title is in his grasp but was not in the mood to be over confident.
“It was a perfect weekend really so I’m very happy with that. But there are still many races to go so I’m just keeping my head down.
“I’m taking it race-by-race and there’s not any point changing my approach. I’m sticking with what I’m doing because it’s working well.”
Defending champion Hamilton was third behind Red Bull’s teenager, Max Verstappen.
