COTY evolves over the years

Much has evolved in the auto industry since the inaugural NST Car of the Year (COTY) Awards were handed out in 2002 to acknowledge the achievements within the motoring industry.

There were 10 categories for the newly launched cars in 2002. Subsequently, the categories were increased in tandem with the wider range of newly launched cars, with 15 categories in 2013 and 16 categories in 2014.

A quick glance at the past overall winners reveals a  mixed  pool of cars. This reflected the changing face of the industry and consequently the yardstick used to benchmark the vehicles.

Nothing quite sums up this fact other than the first two winners of the overall title, the Perodua Kelisa in 2002 followed by the Volvo XC90 in 2003.

The Kelisa, a true car for the rakyat, continues to hold incredible value more than a decade later; a testament to its credentials and utility as a compact runaround.

The Volvo XC90, a stark contrast to the Kelisa in both sizing and pricing but with the backing of class-leading safety tech, proved to be a worthy recipient of the title.

Since then, the winners have included the likes of the BMW 530d (2004),  Mercedes-Benz CLS (2005), and the Ford Ranger 2.2 XLT (2012).

The BMW 530d, a diesel variant, signified the industry’s readiness to accept an engine type, normally reserved for commercial vehicles, in a luxury brand passenger car.

The Ford Ranger 2.2 XLT is the first pick-up truck to win the COTY award. The game changing Ranger 2.2XLT took the top honours for its radical revamp as an urban utility vehicle with an interior that is even more passenger friendly than some cars, terrain capability and value for money proposition.

Each winner was chosen not based on one sole aspect that it excelled in but for the overall breadth of its capabilities that made it a well-rounded champion.

As more and more new or significantly facelifted vehicles are launched, the COTY award selection process, in keeping with the times, involves  acknowledging the latest buying trends in the market such as drivetrains and bodystyle.

The title sponsors of the event have been Mastercard (2003 – 2005), Ambank (2006) and Maybank (2007 to date).
