NAZA Quest Sdn Bhd, the official sole importer and distributor of Chevrolet vehicles in Malaysia will be launching the all-new Chevrolet Colorado in Malaysia, following its regional debut in the Philippines last month.

As one of the activities prior to Thursday’s (Oct 20) official launch, Naza Quest let the media test the car from Kuala Lumpur towards Kuantan on a mix of highway, trunk road and off-road trails.

At the launch, the all-new Chevrolet Colorado will be available in five variants – 2.5 LT manual, 2.5 LT auto, 2.5 LTZ auto, 2.8 LTZ auto and 2.8 High Country auto. Prices start from RM95,000.

Design

Engineered by a team from Brazil, Australia and Thailand, the new Colorado carries a dose of improvements to project it away from its rivals. The Colorado boasts a twin-layered front grille – similar to the American-spec Chevrolet truck – flanked by new redesigned headlights with tube-type LED daytime running lights.

Subtle changes have been made to the tail lights and rear-fog lights now comes as standard.

Overall, the Colorado received refreshed design elements while maintaining traditional pickup truck looks.

Cabin

The Chevrolet design language is brought into the cabin as well, as evidenced by the central display, air-cond vents and dashboard panel. This showcases the tough attributes of the Colorado. The instrument panel gets clean blue markings, white dials and red needles, together with a multi-info display in the middle.

Behind the wheel

Entering the Colorado, you’ll notice the front window drops down by a fraction. The Comfort Closing Windows are there to facilitate door closing so that the doors shut softly due to lowered air pressure. Chevrolet says that the feature reduces potential injuries to the ear
membrane of the occupants.

At highway speed on the NKVE towards Karak Highway, the cabin refinement of the Colorado becomes apparent as this driver didn’t realise that he exceeded speed limit until he looked at the speedmeter. Wind noise is also well-controlled.

Power is not anywhere instantaneous, but once the Colorado registered your input, the 500Nm of torque from its 2.8-litre Duramax launches the vehicle and the transmission immediately upshifts to ensure that the engine stays in the torque range.

You can also select the gear manually by pushing the gear knob to the left to engage manual mode if you want more control, but no shift paddles, though.

After a few driver changes along the East Coast Expressway (LPT), our convoy departed from the highway at the Sri Jaya exit to head to Hutan Lipur Jerangkang, Maran. The two-wheel-drive mode can easily be changed to four-wheel-drive mode by twisting a knob below the centre console; there’s 2H, 4H and 4L options to select from.

The off-road trail of uphill, downhill and uneven surfaces allowed a few other active features to be tested. On side slopes where one of the Colorado’s wheel is hanged, its traction control system works seamlessly to apply braking force to that particular wheel so that the other wheel on the same axle can recommence and propel the truck forward.

Coming down from a steep hill, the driver can focus on the steering and navigate the direction as the Hill Descent Control (HDC) continuously applies braking when necessary, resulting in a controlled and safe descend. The HDC can be activated by pushing the HDC toggle downward and a message will appear on the multi-info display.
